The CRC Programme

The Australian Government established the CRC Programme in 1990. The objective of the CRC Programme is: "to enhance Australia's industrial, commercial and economic growth through the development of sustained, user-driven, cooperative public-private research centres that achieve high levels of outcomes in adoption and commercialisation."

From 1991 up to 30 June 2006, 158 CRC's have been funded.  Currently, there are 56 CRCs operating in 6 sectors: environment (13), agriculture and rural-based manufacturing (15), information and communication technology (5), mining and energy (7), medical science and technology (8) and manufacturing technology (8).

The Commonwealth's CRC Programme emphasises the importance of collaborative arrangements to maximise the benefits of research through an enhanced process of utilisation, commercialisation and technology transfer. It also has a strong education component with a focus on producing graduates with skills relevant to industry needs. The close interaction between researchers and the users of research is a key feature.
